Due to inclement weather here is our obligatory hurricane post:

In order to prepare for the upcoming storm this weekend with windy conditions and possible flooding rain fall, we have provided some helpful tips to keep you, your belongings, and your property safe.  We advise you to take precautions with outside lawn furniture, decorative items, grills or anything not heavy enough to withstand the wind gusts.

To Email (Non-Emergency):

• We ask that you email Gayle Armstrong  to notify her of minor roof leaks, fallen branches and/or trees, or damages which are not of an emergency status, but will need attention when the storm subsides.  Also, please attach a picture with your email, if possible.  *Keep in mind, a roofer cannot fix the leak while it is raining.

 

To Call (Emergency):

• In the event of an emergency call the  on-call phone (803) 331-4469
•  Call 911 if you feel the situation renders immediate assistance or is life threatening.
• If you lose electricity, please contact South Carolina Electric & Gas Company at 1-800-251-7234.

 

Back to our regularly scheduled programming…

Our food drive benefiting Harvest Hope Food Bank has come to a close. Thanks to our generous tenants and owners we killed it, and came incredibly close to reaching our goal!

All in all ColaPro is happy to report we put a major dent in hunger in the Midlands!

No donation was too big or too small!

 

It was always a nice surprise to come in and see what people had left. In case you cant tell that is Campbell’s Tomato Soup front and center there. Who does not love a bowl of that in the winter??

 

 

Speaking of winter…the cold has finally set in around Columbia and it is here to stay. Just a few reminders for the cold season. Keep your faucets dripping at night when the temperature hangs around the mid to low 20’s. **Do not forget about your exterior faucets like the spigot in your yard (what your hose connects to).

Good Samaritan Update

As Ansley, our favorite NYC gal, last mentioned we are holding a food drive to help fight hunger in the Midlands. It has been a little over 10 days and we have already filled one box!

Don’t worry we have plenty of boxes!

 

 

 

A huge thank you from the whole office to all of our amazing tenants and owners who have helped thus far!

We still have a long way to go to reach our 2,500 item goal so keep it coming!

It will be just me from here on out, but don’t worry, I’ll make sure you are in the loop on all things ColaPro. With the change in the weather I will be in touch with tips and all kinds of exciting stuff! But, I will leave the forecasting to the experts…I always call for snow days.

CPM Gives Back to the Community

CPM is proud to help fight hunger in our community.  To show our support, we will be holding a food drive starting on November 2 – December 31 benefiting Harvest Hope Food Bank.  A box will be set up at the front of our office where non-perishable food items can be dropped off.   Our goal is to be able to donate 2,500 items to Harvest Hope Food Bank just in time for the new year!

On another note, I did want to say that unfortunately this will be my last Blog post as one of your CPM representatives.  It’s been a great ride however with a recent relocation it makes sense that the torch so to speak should be passed to none other than our main girl Ferris! (Can I get a woop woop?!?)  Ferris will do a great job and I know you will love hearing what she’s got to say!

Columbia Strong

We decided to go out of order on the blogs this week in order to address what’s been going on in our city.  As I’m typing this post I don’t even know where to begin….Columbia has experienced devastation from the floods and storms this past week unlike we’ve ever seen leaving in it’s aftermath many families without food, shelter, homes and peace of mind.  For those of you in need of government assistance, please contact FEMA by using this link: http://www.disasterassistance.gov/  They will be able to help with medical, food, housing, etc.

As our great city deals with this tragedy we know that Columbia will pull through.  The outpouring of help and love from our community has been and continues to be amazing.  From neighbors housing other neighbors, from residents with boats pitching in to help others vacate the flood and from family and friends and our community joining together to help clean up this mess,  the examples of love and strength are overwhelming. These are the stories that make you believe in humanity and these are the stories that really do make it hard to fathom exactly what has and is still happening in our city.

For many, the weeks and months ahead will be difficult ones however we do know that with the support of our community Columbia will get through this.  We are COLUMBIA STRONG!

Tour de Columbia…Our Staff Favorites: Forest Acres

Here are a few of our favorite things about Forest Acres.

Lillian’s –  CPM’s overall favorite lunch spot.  They have a killer salad with the most delicious dill dressing ever tasted and top it off with fresh grilled chicken.  Yumm I’m drooling just typing this post!  Need a meal to go? Cottage and Vine – Located off Forest Dr., this is a great place to pick up a present or a little something for yourself :).  This store offers a variety of unique gift options ranging from jewelry to tableware to linens to really cool art.  Be sure to check it out……..you will not regret it!

Scout and Molly’s – An awesome little clothing boutique located in Trenholm Plaza.  Whether you need a new pair of dark denims or a statement necklace for the next football game, they have a lot of options and you can always find something to bring home!  Be sure to check out their website at http://www.scoutandmollys.com.

Forest Lake Garden Center – Need a pretty planter?  Or maybe some mums or pumpkins for fall decor?  Look no further! Located on Trenholm Rd. right off of Forest Dr. this is our go to spot for any outdoor needs and will soon be yours too.  They literally have everything you could want for your outdoor needs!

Consign It – I really wish we’d found this consignment store sooner.  They have a ton of consigned furniture in excellent condition and you are sure to find a deal no matter what you’re looking for.  Great for re-decorating your apartment or house on a budget, you’re sure to find something to take home!

Moving? Common Mistakes to Avoid

The thought of moving can be very exciting at times and also very daunting.  To make sure that your move goes as smooth as possible, here are some tips to help avoid common moving mistakes.

1.  Measure, Measure, Measure…we can’t stress this enough!  If you have an extra wide couch that you just can’t live without, make sure that  it fits not only in your new living room but actually through the door.  Sometimes the doorways of certain properties, especially older properties with lots of character and charm have very narrow hallways and door frames. We suggest bringing a measuring tape when viewing a property you are interested in renting.

2.  We all like having water and electricity right?  Before moving, ensure that your water and utilities are transferred into your name by your specified move-in day.  This is super easy to do and you will just need to contact your local service provider and present them with a copy of your lease agreement.  Not sure who your service providers are? Your management company will be able to provide you with this information. Just ask!

3.  Always get Rental Insurance….you just should!  At CPM we actually require this of all of our tenants and here’s why.  For a small monthly fee, you can obtain this insurance which actually protects your personal belongings such as electronics, musical equipment, furniture, etc. should an issue occur in the property and your items are damaged.  Property owners are only responsible to fix the property itself, they aren’t responsible for any of their renter’s personal items.  Trust us, it’s more affordable to pay for Renter’s Insurance than have to replace your prized possessions!

New to Columbia? 10 Things You Need to Know

1. WEATHER -The weather is crazy….in the summers the temps can reach well into the triple digits and we even get snow in the winter, well sometimes.  Prepare accordingly and dress in layers.  You never know what you’re going to get!
2. TRAFFIC – Even though Columbia is a fair sized city, be prepared for your patience to be tested if you are A) Trying to drive downtown after work B) Trying to drive anywhere downtown on a game day or C) Trying to drive down I-26 in either direction between 5-6pm.  You get used to it after awhile so just hang in there!
3. PALMETTO BUGS – We know we know, they are disgusting!  Unfortunately there is no way to entirely rid a property of them as they are a staple and come with the territory of living in Columbia, SC.  They didn’t get their name no reason!  We can however suggest some stellar exterminating companies to help keep them at bay from your property.  Out of sight out of mind right?!?
4. SWEET TEA – For all you Northerners moving to Cola, if you order sweet tea there is no need to add sugar…it’s already  included and this delicious drink will soon become a staple in your diet.
5. LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION – Columbia is a great city to live in for multiple reasons.  Two of our favorites? You are less than a 2 hour drive from the beach or the mountains. Hard part?  Deciding how you want to spend your free weekends!
6. COLLEGE TOWN – Columbia is the epitome of a college town.  Although you may be most familiar with the University of South Carolina, Columbia is also home to Allen University, Benedict College, Columbia College and Midlands Technical College.
7. STATE CAPITOL – For those of you who didn’t already know, Columbia is the state capitol of South Carolina.  That is all….we just thought you should know!
8. BOILED PEANUTS – Whether they are homemade or from Cromers, you will see these babies everywhere, especially the shells.  If you haven’t had them before, give them a try.  You won’t regret this decision!
9. FAMILY FRIENDLY – Being a college town you may not expect it, but Columbia is very family friendly.  There are multiple indoor and outdoor activities to satisfy every family member.  Might we suggest one of our many sporting events whether it be a USC football game or a Blowfish baseball game.  Sports not your thing?  Take a stroll through Riverbanks Zoo or check out the latest exhibit at one of our many museums.
10. COLUMBIYEAH! – Our slogan “Famously Hot Yet Surprisingly Cool” is indicative of all the growth Columbia has seen and the entertainment it has to offer.  Yeah we may be biased, but it’s a pretty cool place to live!

Soda City Summers…..Top Summertime Activities

As the summer months are wrapping up, be sure to make the most of these next few weeks and enjoy some of Columbia’s best summertime activities including a list of our favorites which we’ve included for you below.  After all, Columbia is “Famously Hot But Surprisingly Cool”!

Lake Murray – Who doesn’t enjoy  going to the lake?  From downtown Columbia, you can find yourself at beautiful Lake Murray in about 30 minutes.  Between boating, tubing or just an afternoon lunch at the Marina, this is a great way to pass the time and get some sun!

Explore the Vista – Whether you like to shop til you drop, listen to live music or are looking for a night of unique dining, the Columbia Vista offers all of the above.  The Vista is totally walkable so you can knock out all three of these activities at once if so inclined!

Pelicans Snoballs – This is a CPM office favorite.  Located on Rosewood, this is the perfect stop on your way home from class or back to the office after lunch.  With over 100 flavors to choose from, this flavored snow literally melts in your mouth.  From personal experience we suggest getting a medium, the small is just never enough! http://www.pelicanssnoballs.com/

Floating or Kayaking the River – Looking for adventure?  Look no further than the Palmetto Outdoor Center.  They can hook you up for a kayaking or tubing trip down the Congaree & Saluda Rivers. Top Moving Companies in Columbia

Moving can be a daunting task for anyone, especially when it’s a re-occurring event which if you’re a student in Columbia, SC is probably the case.  To add insult to injury, Columbia’s extreme summer climate doesn’t exactly help out by making moving in the summer any easier or any more enjoyable for that matter.

If you’re anything like us, your moving company has consisted of a tired dad (who let’s be honest is getting older) and a few friends who you somehow wrangled into helping you with the offer of free pizza and beer (for those over 21).  Eventually, they will stop answering the phone when your lease expires and you will need professional help!
